Video Concept Project

Hello,

For my video concept I came up with the idea on to create an instructional video on how to effectively wake up in time for 7:50 class. Many people find that waking up for a 7:50 class in all together way too difficult. By creating a video that would teach a student how to effective wake up for a 7:50 class, more people would show up on time and missing class wouldn't be an issue. In this video I would incorporate such things as the triple-alarm system and the cold shower method in order to prove that waking up for class is actually feasible.

Video Remix Project

Hello,

For this assignment we were required to use iMovie to re-contextualize the idea behind a movie trailer. In this, I took the heavily popular French Nature documentary "March of the Penguins" and re-contextualized it to be a military movie where the penguins are bound together by brotherhood. In actuality, the movie is about the journey that penguins traditionally make to their annual mating grounds.

Flat vs. Depth Blog Post

Hello,

For this assignment we were required to read a blog post made by someone else explaining the difference between certain camera angels when staging a scene. Afterwards we were supposed to come up with our own example that would agree with some of the concepts that he outlined in the blogpost.

The movie the Social Network is about the creation of the widely popular social-networking site Facebook. The movie takes a little big more of a dramatic approach to how the site was taken and chronicles the story of the creator of Facebook. As you can see in these pictures the movie uses shots that are more dynamic and create a sense of drama that adds to the overall mood of the movie. This is similar to the concepts that are outlined in the blog post that we had to read.

Remix editing project

Hello,

For my remix editing project I plan to make the March of The Penguins trailer into a military style trailer where the penguins are required to do the certain tasks as per the instruction of certain penguins in the trailer.

I plan to get to footage from youtube and use music from the sites that we have used in prior projects.

Vox Pop Proposal

Hello,

For this blog post we were required to come up with a question that could be asked in a "Vox Pop" or "Voice of the People" interview that would be interesting to listeners. These types of recordings are used all the time to generalize someones understanding of a topic or to give a lot of opinions on a specific topic in a short amount of time. Here is my proposal.

1.) Question: If you could change lives with one person, who would it be?
2.) I think this would be an interesting topic for people to hear about because there will be so many differing answers. Also because it would be interesting to see who people look up to or envy.

Logo Design Process

Hello,

For this assignment we were required to create an original logo for a logo package that we would be creating in class. We first had to read the required readings and than design a logo. While we designed the logo we had to answer a series of different questions and make a blog post about it. Here are my answers to the questions.

1. Who is the intended audience for your logo? (Client, age group, gender, interests, ect.)
The intended audience for my logo is males of all ages who are interested in barbershop music.

2. Does your logo reflect design trends often targeted to your intended audience? Do you want it to?
I believe that my design reflects trends that are often targeted towards men because it gets to the point and there is no real questing as to what the logo is trying to portray.

3. If you had to summarize the style you want for your logo in a single word, what would it be?
Simple.

4. Look at your sketch. How will it read at a small size? Could you simplify the design so that the basic shape will still be easy to see at a small size?
I think that my image would look fine at a smaller size and wouldn't need to be simplified in order for the basic shape to still be seen visibly at a small size.

Tyler

Master Design

Hello,

For this assignment we were required to read a series of three blog posts that described what it takes to be a master designer. According to these blogs, a master designer knows how to properly limit their fonts, and colors as well as provide a good contrast in their artwork. After reading the blogs, we were required to look for a poser, ad, or web page that exemplifies the principles that we learned. Here is my result:

This picture is from a website that does creative digital remakes of movie covers. Obviously, this poster is a remake of the title page of the popular movie Halloween. I feel like this poster does a really good job at showing all of the different principals that are outlined in the "Becoming a Master Designer" blog posts. The font is limited as there is only one type of font on the entire picture. However, the fact that the font is really simple and plain, plays into the picture being so serious. The artist also limited their colors by making the picture only three colors that all seem to work really well together. Since the picture is really simple, outside of the details in the face, it has really good contrast in the different layers of the picture in regards to the background, the silhouette of the person and the face. Overall, the artist was able to create and interesting image that follows the guidelines outlined in the blogs very nicely.

Hats & Scarves Monthly

Hello,

For this assignment we were required to pick out two different fonts in order to create an original cover for a magazine. The idea was that we used some of the recommendations such as message, legibility and contrast, that we learned in class to create an interesting title that would showcase these concepts. We first had to download interesting fonts of our choosing from www.dafonts.com and incorporate these fonts into our picture. This is my result.

Mask Tools in Photoshop

Hello,

For this assignment we were required to use one of the photos that we have taken for class and experiment with using different gradient tools in Photoshop to make the photo look interesting. Here is my result

The first gradient layer I decided to use a two color gradient with a radial style. I applied the overlay blend mode in order to create a highlighted effect with the lighter of the two colors on the inside of the radial blend.

The second gradient layer I used was the paper image that we had in our class file. I applied the vivid light  blend mode to the picture in order to showcase the ripples of the paper. I then lowered the opacity in order to make sure that the picture wasn't completely blown out of proportion and that you could actually still see the image.

The third gradient layer that I used was the red-yellow metal image file that we had in our class file. I applied the darken blend mode to the gradient in order to give the picture a really dark-rich color to contrast the highlight of the middle of the photo. This really added interesting details to the body of the sculpture and added for some good contrast to the vivid light blend mode that I used on the previous gradient layer.

The final gradient layer that I used was the blurred color streaks image file that we had in our class file. I applied the color burn to the picture and lowered the opacity of the blend tool. I feel like this gave an interesting color contrast to the picture because most of the sculpture was more of a darker tone and this applied some different colors to the picture. The addition of the color burn on the picture adds to the aging effect that I was looking for when deciding which gradient layer to use on my picture.

Until next time,
Tyler

Photo Editing

In this assignment we were assigned to edit two photos. On the first one, we were supposed to change the color of something on the picture and then making one more altercation to the photo. In the next one, the portrait was supposed to be in color, while the background was in black and white. Also, we were supposed to do one additional change to the photo. These were my results.

Crazy Workout Regime Photo Story

Hello again,

For this assignment we are required to come up with an interesting photo story that we can tell through a photojournalism style. Below, I have outlined what I believe would be a successful and interesting photo story.

Working out and keeping physically fit is something that is constantly in the minds of college students. Everyone always thinks about ways that they can get ahead of the game in terms of their workout regime. However, not many people take working out as serious as some of my friends. They are constantly talking about the current workout tips that will help them achieve their personal goals and often times exceeding the thoughts of a normal gym-goer. The extent that my friends think about their workout schedule can only be described through photography. For this reason, I believe that chronicling the story of their weekly workout will make for a successful photo story. Although I don't participate to the level that my roommates enjoy working out, I plan on going behind the scenes and giving some insight into exactly what makes their regime successful. This photo story would be interesting because it will give people insight into a successful workout schedule and inform people of the amount of work it takes to work out to the level where they can see results. One specific shot that I intend on taking and using as my lead photo involves the excessive amount of protein items that my roommates used in their workout. Often times the protein shakes come in total disregard of room cleanliness. The rush to get a shake in before a work out leads to spillage on the counter and sink full of dishes. This photo would show the dedication it takes to have a crazy workout regime and the sacrifices it would take to do this under the tight schedule a college student must face.

Pay attention for updates!!!
Until next time,
Tyler

Photo Editing

For this assignment we were required to use the knowledge that we learning in Photoshop in order to edit a photo according to certain guidelines. The first picture was the original picture that I decided to use from when we took pictures of statues around campus.

ORIGINAL:

In the first adjusted picture we were required to take a more natural approach to editing the picture. In order to make the improvements, I used a brightness/contrast adjustment in order to brighten up the photo a little bit, along with a levels adjustment in order to re-establish where the darks and lights where in the photo. I feel like this brightens up Gandhi's face and really adds some good overall brightness to the photo.

NATURAL EDITING:

In this next picture we were allowed to take a little bit more of a farfetched and creative take on editing out photos. For this picture I decided to use the posterize effect in order to give the statue a unique texture. Then I added a different tint using the black and white adjustment to give it an interesting color.

Kodak Composition Article

For this assignment we were required to read this article that outlined how to better our photo compositions and make them into something that was more pleasing to the eye. In order to complete this assignment, I chose to photograph my roommate (who will be remain nameless) because taking pictures of him would boost his ego and its just plain funny to see how he reacts when the camera is at his attention. The following photos are the results of the photo shoot that as you can see with his changing of outfits half-way through, he took very seriously. Also, how these pictures pertain to the reading the Kodak article.

Simplicity:
This picture properly reflects the ideas about simplicity because my roommate is clearly the center of attention in the picture and the background doesn't take away from the overall quality of the photograph. The idea that he would be laying on the couch also goes along with the concept of simplicity in that there isn't the normal clutter that you would normally associate to be in a living room, taking up the focus of the picture, but rather all of the attention is properly place on the subject of the photo.

Lines:
This picture represents the concept of lines in a photo graph. The repetitiveness of the horizontal line in this photograph help to point the focus of the viewer to the center of the composition, where the subject is featured. Also, repetitive line usage can be used to help people focus on something that sticks out of the normal structure of the photo. In this case, this is my roommate in that his use of a dark color really pops off of the horizontal, light-colored, lines.

Framing:
This picture properly displays the concept of framing in a photograph. The subject of the photo is the center of attention while being framed by the lines of the couch. These lines are used to make the subject seem as though he adds to the overall depth of the photo, simply because it heightens the importance of subject to the overall composition.

Balancing:
This photograph displays the concept of balancing in a composition. The subject of the photograph is featured with proper proportions to the background and the shape of his shoulders provides for an interesting balance of shapes throughout the photo. Also, the contrast of the dark in the cabinets and the white of the counter tops, coupled with the contrast between the color of his skin and the clothes that he is wearing, adds for a great deal of balance when it comes to color and textures.

After awhile, the subject got a little upset with the overall quality of his photos and decided to end the photo shoot under his own conditions. However not before I was able to grab a bunch more photos for future photo projects. All in all, using the guidelines displayed in the Kodak Composition article, I was able to better understand how to improve the quality of my future photographs.

Until Later,
Tyler

Photographing Statues

Gandhi. Everyone knows Gandhi. It's one of the reasons why I chose to photograph him for my statue. However, after learning about effective ways to shoot a nice camera shot, I am afraid that I might not have given him the justice that he deserves! The angle that I shot this picture with was pretty normal. There really wasn't anything out of the ordinary with regards to the angle that I chose for this picture.  Since the angle is a simple and standard picture angle, I really didn't fill the area of the picture as well as I possibly could. Also, I didn't take into account the background of my image as the current background adds nothing to picture and shouldn't be a main part of the image. Hopefully this next time around I will do a better job at completing some of the tips we learned in class.

This was my second attempt at photographing this historical figure. My second go-around was a lot more successful because I was able to capture some of the photography tips that we talked about in class into what I feel is a really interesting photo. This photo uses the space of the photo really well and doesn't give any real emphasis to the background. Also, since it is a closer up picture of Gandhi, it is able to capture the rain on the face of the statue, which is a cool aspect to the photo.

Mediated Communications Day 1

Hi. My name is Tyler Sekula. I am from Grantham, New Hampshire and a freshman Communications major with a journalism track and a criminal justice minor. This semester I am hoping to learn more about the programs that are essential to mediated communications in hopes of better understanding what I might encounter later on in my career. While my overall dream is to go to law school and become a sports agent working in contract law, I know that for the time being taking classes in a communication major will help teach me how to better communicate. In order to achieve my goals in life, I have to learn how to better use the resources that are given to me in a communications major.
